Every time gas prices go up, it hits consumers as both drivers and taxpayers.

Frank Suarez with the Fort Wayne Public Works Department says the city has a contract deal with gas companies to pay $2.99 for every gallon of gas. That rate does not change if gas prices increase.

""We use other measures as well as going to hybrids in some of our vehicles in order to save money and we have been able to do that" says Suarez.

The City of Fort Wayne currently has over 1800 vehicles that drove over 11,000,000 miles in 2012.

Suarez warns that if gas prices increase, city gas rates will go up and taxpayers will have to pay for that increase.

"Well certainly if prices continue to go up that could affect how we negotiate and what kind of contract we could achieve in the next year." says Suarez.

Gas prices have risen from $3.14 in January to $3.79 today in Fort Wayne.
