It's a disturbing statistic for the Hoosier State. Indiana is leading the nation is teen driving deaths.

Indiana saw the highest jump in teen driving deaths during the first half of last year, Now Indiana officers are working even harder to prevent teen deaths on the roadways.

The report was just released by the Governors Highway Safety Association. It tracked the number of fatal accidents during the first half of last year. Every state was tracked and at the top of the list was Indiana.

The report states that from January 2012 until June 2012, Indiana had 16 teen driving deaths. This just looked at just 16 and 17-year-old drivers.

The report showed that during that same time period in 2011, Indiana saw a much lower number, just three deaths.

It is illegal for everyone in Indiana to text and drive. Even more, for drivers under 18, no cell phone use in any capacity is allowed behind the wheel.

Indiana State Police Sergeant Ron Galaviz says he suspects that texting was a big factor.

Other top states in that report include Tennessee and Alabama.

Drugs and alcohol are also believed to be responsible for those increases in deaths.
