Mother Wants Answers for Death of Her Son

Elmo Portee Junior was killed last March after his car was accidentally struck by an Allen county squad car.  It's been over eight months since the fatal crash and Portee's mother Lucile, is demanding answers for her son's death.  

It has been an extremely difficult year for Portee after losing her oldest son Elmo, or "Junior" as she calls him. She says that until the death of her son is acknowledged by the county she will never be able to move forward and heal.

"It could have been anyone at that intersection, unfortunately, it was my child at that intersection," said Portee. 

Junior was killed at the intersection of Diebold and DuPont last March, after an Allen County squad car hit his van while traveling at high speeds and sirens on.  Portee is frustrated with the lack of communication from the county.

"He was pinned, buckled in, pinned, the whole left side of his body crushed.  I have not received a postcard, a letter, a telegram, a writing in the sky, saying I'm sorry my condolences," said Portee. 

Portee started journaling her feelings, a routine that she says in some ways reconnects her with Junior.  

"I'm working on a project for you, I'm making a scrap book of pictures so that your sons will know their dad," said Portee.

While Portee wants to be able to forgive the officer who caused the crash,  she doesn't think that day will ever come. 

"How can you forgive someone of something that's not even being acknowledged so what am I forgiving for," said Portee.   

Portee is tired of checking the mailbox waiting for a response from the county, so she has sought legal advice to get the answers she's looking for.

"I'm not looking for any monetary gains I'm just looking for justice," said Portee.    

  The officer responsible for causing the crash will appear in front of a Grand Jury during the third week of December.
