University of Saint Francis senior Lance Carey has been named the Cougars' 2012 recipient of the Silver Helmet, an annual award which is selected by the USF coaching staff. The USF Silver Helmet recognizes academic and athletic achievement as well as outstanding attitude.
Carey (Leo, IN / Leo H.S.) was presented with this Silver Helmet Award at the conclusion of the 15th annual USF football awards banquet at Landmark Conference and Reception Centre. He played defensive end and defensive tackle for USF in four years. Carey, a health and physical education secondary major, was named to the Capital One Academic All-America District 3 team, is a two-time NAIA Daktronics Scholar-Athlete and MSFA All-Academic Team selection, and was All-MSFA second team defensive lineman in 2012.
Carey played in all 12 games in 2012 finishing with nine solo tackles, 16 assists, 25 total, 1.5 tackles-for-loss for 4 yards, 1 sack for 3 yards and was credited with 2 quarterback hurries.
USF Head Coach Kevin Donley and his coaching staff recognized the 19 seniors for their contributions including Austin Coleman, who was awarded a special award for setting the NAIA record for career kickoff return touchdowns (8), and 19 more underclassmen award winners. USF Athletic Director Mike McCaffrey presented Donley with a special plaque recognizing Donley as the NAIA record holder for career wins, 263 and counting.
