Ivy Tech, the state’s largest institution of higher learning, is reporting a jump in enrollment from last year.

The college reports a 33.5% increase in students from Summer 2008 to Summer 2009.  That's an increase of more than 12,000 students, according to the report.

Administrators at Ivy Tech attribute part of the increase to the economy as many people are heading back to school.  But they say Ivy Tech’s enrollment began growing before the economic slowdown.

Juan Gonzales, a 40-year-old student at Ivy Tech, worked as a welder for 15 years before being laid off.  Now, he’s pursuing a degree in welding with hopes of landing a better job after graduation.
