The American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women, held their inaugural event Thursday in Fort Wayne. There color of the day was red as all types and ages of women gathered to help raise money and support women with heart disease. FOX Fort Wayne was told that heart disease is the number one cause of death among women, and that one woman dies ever three minuets of heart disease. Around 150 women went red today in support of research for women with heart disease. Lynne Gilmore the Go Red Event Spokesperson says “Your heart is your life blood of your body and going red means education and awareness of your heart and the health of those around you that you love and care for.” There were red shoes, red bags and red from head to toe. Marcia Adams the Go Red Event Speaker says “It’s a time for women to come together in a unified way and say, look we are important, our health is important and we must stop heart disease.” But cardiovascular disease can be prevent and even reversed. Dr. Sabeena Ramrakhiani a Cardiologist with Lutheran Medical Group says “If you keep your blood pressure under control, your cholesterol under control, those are things you can change. Keep your weight in check and exercise 5 times a week if not all 7 for at least 30 minutes. That’s the best you can do for yourself.” This event was not just informational, there was a lot female fun going on! Such as educational seminars, spa treatments, makeovers, and what else but…shopping!!! Visitors even had the opportunity to get their blood tested to see if they had diabetes. Diabetes can lead to heat disease. Former TV host and heart transplant survivor Marcia Adams told us why this event is important to women of all ages. “We used to think of heart disease as something that old people had but not any longer. It’s attacking people who are 35 and that is really serious.” All of the money raised at the event will go toward further research and education on women with heart disease. The event coordinators say they will be back next year, and hope to add even more Red, fun and informational.
