Updated: June 10, 2009
A man died when his pick-up truck crashed into the side of a house in Woodburn. The truck was southbound on bull rapids road, when it crossed the front lawn, smashed into a statue, and slammed into the house. The vehicle and part of the house caught fire and burned for thirty minutes. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Nick Powell and his mother were inside the house. “I was upstairs in my room playing a video game when I heard a car coming and I thought thats really close and then it hit and the whole upstairs shook” says Nick Powell. “It was much worse than you can imagine; to see the pickup truck crumbled into your house and the flames, what they did to the house. It was very emotional” says Nick’s father, Martin Powell, who was not home at the time of the crash. “It was very sad. Were just glad that our daughter and grandson are ok” says Nick’s grandfather, Carl Powell. The Allen County Sheriffs Department is investigating. The drivers identity has not been released. Nick Powell says the vehicle had been traveling between 60 and 80 miles per hour.
