Some local troubled teens are losing their shelter.

Kryder and Yoder Group Homes are closing on Monday, July 6.

   The reasons: money and politics.

In 2008, state law changed. The Department of Child Services took over funding for Indiana Juvenile Services. However, DCS is not required to pay for any facilities that aren't eligible for federal funding. To be eligible, the feds require the Youth Services Center to limit its total capacity to 25 kids. But the county's numbers were too high, making it ineligible.

The plan was to turn the homes over to private management, and the state would reimburse it for each juvenile.  But the state and a private company, White’s Residential and Family Services, couldn't agree on a reimbursement amount.

   Now, the homes will close.
