FOX Fort Wayne met with Carl and Nella Adams Friday. Nella has Dementia Alzheimer’s. For almost two years now the Adams family has benefited from the home hospice service. Carl Adams says their help means so much. “Hospice aids are here every day. Hospice nurses are here 3 or 4 times a week, or more depending on how much I call them. They just been great to us and I don’t know how I could have handled it without them.” Judy Lopshire has volunteered with the Adams family for almost 2 year. She says she volunteers to help those who are sick live out their lives. “We don’t um…die everyday. We only die once, so we don’t have to live like we are dying everyday, just that one day.” Hospice volunteers can help in a variety of ways from cooking, companionship, and even video taping patients life stories. Judy Bieker, the Parkview Bereavement Volunteer, says “Literally they sit and they talk about their lives. It’s the last thing they give back to their families. Some of them literally tell their families goodbye.” The job of a volunteer is no easy task, especially because emotions are involved. But Judy says the reward is huge. All hospice volunteers have to go through training and background checks.
