Over fifty local businesses have already taken the first step to ‘go green.’

“There are many ways you can be environmentally friendly and save money” says Wendy Barrott, Director of Energy for the City of Fort Wayne. A new Green City Business Program is giving training to local businesses; helping them understand how to make their business more environmentally friendly.

“We promote a green business. We have a green product so it's important for us to put our money where our mouth is” says Joe Bond of Water Furnace International.

In order to become certified in this program you need to incorporate the following into your daily business schedule: energy conservation, water conservation, pollution prevention and solid waste recycling. Cory Deietz knows this checklist well.

Morrison Kattman Menze is one of four businesses in Fort Wayne to already become Green City program certified. “It gave us an advantage to be an architecture firm that believes in green and sustainable design” says Deietz.

One of the little things the company has done to become greener is getting rid of all water bottles from the office. “We've implemented the Brita pitcher so we don't use water bottles” says Deietz.

The Green City Business program hopes to certify 100 businesses by the end of this year. If you'd like to find out how your business can attend one of these sessions head to www.cityoffortwayne.org/energy/gb/.
