The Postal Service is only in the discussion process. Being one of the largest cities in Indiana, Fort Wayne would see Post Office downsizing. Kim Yates the Spokes person for the Greater Indiana District of the United States Postal Service says “Yes, I can tell you right now that the Postal Service is looking at 3,000 of our largest offices. What these are, are the offices that are in urban areas. The Fort Waynes of our state, the Indianapolises, the South Bends. Those post offices that have stations and branches beneath them.” The company is loosing money. This is caused by both the economy, and current trends such as e-mail and online bill payment. Consolidation is not the only way the Postal Service is trying to reduce company costs. Yates says “We have also adjusted our carrier routes. Since the volume is less, the carries have had addresses added to their routes to keep them busy for an eight hours shift.” Possible Consolidation could mean that Post offices as close as five miles apart like the one on Old Trail Road and the one on Bluffton Road could become on in the same. Its unknown how many jobs could be impacted by a decision to go through with consolidation. Postal officials say there isnt a set date on when the decision will be made. They expect it could take two or three months.
