After a month of collecting donated goods, its packing day! Dorothy Everhart is leading the Adopt-A-Soldier event in Fort Wayne. She says this is not charity, its a responsibility. “Its my duty. Its my duty to do this. I have to take the time to do this.”
Dorothy has been in daily contact with the Sergeant Gail Schenell. Schenell oversees the Lightning base in remote Afghanistan. She tells Dorothy what the soldiers need most.
Everhart says “Their barracks are put together with duct tape, so they asked for nails to reinforce things because they just havent been able to get it yet.”
Items like shampoo and socks, things that we here in the U.S. consider necessities, are just some of the things these soldiers are asking for.
All of the items were donated, including money to pay for shipping. Dorothy says it was a community effort.
Tuesday the volunteers packed up two-hundred and eleven packages. The base should receive the packages in the next 3 weeks.
