Hunger Action Month

One in six people in the U.S. suffers from hunger, and Fort Wayne is no exception. Food Bank officials say the timing couldnt be better to raise hunger awareness, because they keep seeing more and more people at their door.
Claudia Johnson, the Communications Director at Community Harvest Food Bank, says “Theres a hunger situation in this community! Its not somewhere else, its here and everyone can help.”
16,500 new people in need visit the food bank each week.
Sheri Frank a volunteer with the Project Help Food Bank, says “Its a difficult job to see these families that are hungry.”
Many say the economy is to blame for the rise in hunger.
Johnson says “Its people who have never experienced hunger before. Have no idea how to work the system, if you will. Dont know where to go.”
They are calling for you to do something about it.
Johnson says “Every time you visit a fast food restaurant or get a fancy coffee, throw your change in your cup holder. At the end of the month just donate that.”
In these economic times we cling tight to our wallets. Youll be surprised just how far a donation can go.
Johnson says “We can provide 7 meals on one dollar.”
As part of Hunger Action Month, Community Harvest invites you to visit the warehouse for their open house event.
Johnson says “I think once they come here and see the volume of food that we move, they will get a better understanding of what hunger is in this community.”
Community Harvest’s Open house event will be held on September 17th from 1:00 to 6:00.
