More new homes were sold nationwide in August, but the numbers are still down from last year. Analysts expected stronger sales.

According to the U.S. Bureau of the Census, new home sales in August rose slightly to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 429,000. That’s up slightly from July’s rate of 426,000. But new home sales are down from a year ago.

It's just the opposite for existing home sales. The National Association of Realtors reports those sales fell in August. But they are still higher than a year ago.
