Officials Investigate Wabash Ave Fire

By: Robert Bumsted
Updated: April 8, 2012
Officials are trying to determine what caused a fire at a vacant factory on the city's Southeast Side.

Firefighters spent much of the evening Saturday trying to put out a fire at the former Wayne Metal Protection plant on Wabash Avenue.

So far, Investigators have not commented on possible causes of the fire. WFFT spoke to several people around the neighborhood Sunday who said they were told the fire may be suspicious.

"One of the officers said they saw a couple teenagers vandalizing the building and they had accidentally or purposely caught something on fire," said Otis Atkins-Manu who lives a few houses down from the fire.

Fort Wayne Fire would not verify those comments to WFFT on Sunday.

Fire officials also say they have ruled out the possibility of contamination from chemicals inside the building. Nobody was injured.
