State Police Crack Down on Careless Driving

The number of deadly accidents in indiana is on the rise. State troopers announced a new plan to bring that number down by focusing on small violations.
State police say overall, car accidents are down 12 percent so far in 2012 -- but the number of fatal crashes is on par with 2011.
On Thursday, State Police announced a program that cracks down on small violations like tailgating and unexpected lane changes. They say those violations can easily cause accidents and are often warning signs for distracted driving.
"[These are] things that in the past maybe we've associated with intoxicated or fatigued drivers," says Sgt. Ron Galaviz with the Indiana State Police. "But now with the prevalence of cell phones and other things that will make people go off the roadway."
Troopers say they're also taking the new texting law very seriously. They say more than one thousand crashes last year were related to cell phone use.
