Sturgis Street Fires

By: Allison Hall
Updated: June 29, 2012
This morning WFFT headed back to the scene of last night's fires on Sturgis Street to speak with homeowners. Matt Cotton and his girlfriend, of 615 Sturgis Street, were not home at the time of the fire, but arrived at the scene just in time to rescue their dog from their home before the flames spread from 611 Sturgis.

Cotton arrived at his home today to go through what may be salvageable and to find out what all was lost in the fire. The upstairs and back half of his home were completely burned, but the front room was left untouched, saving his grandfather's antique desk from the 1930's.

The Fort Wayne Fire Department was called to the fire around 7:40 last night. Fire crews found heavy smoke and flames coming from 611 Sturgis and 605 Sturgis. The flames eventually traveled with the wind over to 615 Sturgis, and firefighters were able to stop it from spreading. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but neighbors say they heard firecrackers just before the blaze began.
