Fatal House Fire in SW Ft. Wayne

Residents in one Southwest neighborhood are mourning the loss of a neighbor. This morning an elderly man was killed after investigators say a fire broke out in his kitchen.
Crews responded to the home around five o'clock this morning on the 700 block of Dewald Street. When they entered the home, they found them man lying unconscious on the first floor. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
Neighbors said the man was in his 80's and often chatted with people on the block.
"He was very friendly, he cared about the neighborhood," said Amanda Shady who lives behind the home. "He just came up and started talking to my daughter, who does that anymore? It's just a shame, he seemed like a really good guy," she said.
Investigators have not yet released the man's name. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
