I-69 commuters will soon have one new thing to pay attention to while they are driving.  Re-numbering starts in August and will be completed by the fall of this year. INDOT Spokesperson Mary Foster says "Travelers may see some barrels and arrow boards directing them to one lane of I-69 when the work is being done."

The numbers are changing because I-69 is going to be starting at I-64 near the Indiana Kentucky border down at Evansville. Exit 0 will be there, causing all of the other numbers to shift.  Mary Foster says "Mentally people will get used to just adding 200 miles to the existing numbers."

The new and old exit number will appear on the signs until 20-17.   The new number will appear at the top, while the old number will appear at the bottom.  For example, if your old exit was 22, your new exit would be 222.

They say if you have a gps, like this one, in your car, you will most likely need to do a manual software update for the changes to take effect.  Other gps systems should do it for you.  Foster says "it's an automatically updating gps like you have on your phone it will automatically update."

First responders attending today's press conference say they are preparing their workers for the change.  The Indiana State Police says they do not expect this to impact their response time.  ISP Sergeant Dan Mawhorr say "If we have an accident at the 135 and at the 335, we know that that's the same spot. It seems confusing but it's really not now that we know this is happening, we are going to expect these issues."

INDOT says traffic should be minimally affected.
