One week from today Burmese Democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi will be here in Fort Wayne. 10,000 people are expected to pack the Memorial Coliseum to hear her speak.

Aung San Suu Kyi will be in the U.S to receive a Congressional gold medal.

She was awarded the Medal in 2008 but she was under house arrest. She had been held under house arrest as a political prisoner because of her belief in democracy for 15 years.  She was released last year and won a seat in the Nation's parliament. Now she's headed to Fort Wayne and supporters that I talked to say it's like a dream come true.

Fort Wayne is home to one of the largest populations of Burmese people in the world, outside of Burma.  That's why members of the welcome committee say it is so fitting for Aung San Suu Kyi to speak in the Summit City.

The historical figure will be delivering a message about liberty and democracy.  IPFW is helping host Suu Kyi. Students from all over the country are expected to fill Coliseum seats, coming from places like Toronto, Minnesota, and Illinois.

The Suu Kyi welcoming committee is urging local businesses with Burmese employees to excuse their employees so that they can attend historical event.

The Burmese say this is a once in a lifetime event.  The event is free and open to the public.  Again it's next Tuesday at the memorial Coliseum, doors open at 7:30 am.  The program starts at 9.
