According to the Fort Wayne City Code, signs must be at least 11 feet from the street or curb. On streets with sidewalks, campaign signs cannot be placed in the grassy area between the sidewalk an the curb.
The ordinance prohibits campaign signs from being placed on city property.
"It's a safety issue for motorists," says Frank Surez of the city utilities department. "It distracts them when there's a lot of signs that are too close to the road and also at intersections -- it can block somebody's view."
Homeowners with signs closer than 11 feet can be asked by the city to remove them. The city also has the authority to remove problem signs and destroy them at will.
