With just one week until the election, getting a chance to sit back and relax is a rare moment for candidates.
This is especially true for U.S. Senate candidate Richard Mourdock (R) , who's had one grueling week. During a Senate debate last week, Mourdock made this remark about rape, pregnancy and abortion: "Life is that gift from god. I think that even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something god intended to happen."
The comment sparked widespread criticism and gained national attention. While some Republicans stood behind Mourdock, others, including Governor Mitt Romney, tried to keep their distance. Indiana gubernatorial candidate Mike Pence also said he strongly disagreed with Mourdock's statement.
Today, WFFT caught up with Mourdock talk about reaction to his remark.
"A day is a 100 years in politics" Mourdock tells WFFT.
Mourdock says he moved past the controversy and his main focus now is getting Hoosiers working again
"What I think is most gratifying to me is that Hoosiers are talking about getting the economy going again" he says. Mourdock focused specifically on small businesses and the critical role he says they play in Indiana.
"We're not seeing a government moving forward with the plans that'll get businesses going again" Mourdock says.
The latest poll by Rasmussen shows Mourdock with a 5 percent lead over Democratic opponent Joe Donnelly.
