Snow Blankets Fort Wayne Roads

You weren't alone if you found yourself slipping and sliding behind the wheel today.   Both the Indiana Department of transportation and the City of Fort Wayne had snow plows out in full force trying to make the roads as safe as possible.

WFFT was out on the roads today and spoke with INDOT and the City of Fort Wayne about how they plan on keeping the roads clear and safe for motorists.  

The city and state were prepared for the snow as they had plow trucks on the job days prior to the storm, but the plows were only so effective as the snow quickly covered many roads throughout Fort Wayne making driving difficult and in some cases dangerous.

"We have all of our plows out at this point," said Mary Foster, spokesperson for The Indiana Department of Transportation. 

The Indiana Department of Transportation says its snow plows covered more than 140 routes spanning 45 miles each.   Foster say INDOT advises motorists to let the   plows lead the way.

"It' still safer to follow the plow truck because you don't know what's in front of the truck.  You know what's behind the truck has been plowed so it's actually safer to follow the plow," said Foster 

The combination of gusting winds and constant snow-fall throughout much of the day had some questioning if the plows were really on the job.   

"Drivers who are out may notice that it looks as if the road hasn't been plowed," said Foster.    

However, Foster says that's not the case, rather INDOT snow plow drivers are working 12 hour shifts around the clock. 

"They are trying their best to get the route covered and then turning around and doing all over again.  Rest Assured they are out there plowing even if it looks as if they are not," said Foster. 

Frank Suarez with The city of Fort Wayne says they have over 30 trucks on the roads.  He adds that the city is prepared to keep those crews on the road through the night if necessary.
