It's been a staple of elementary school education for years. But did you know kids in the Hoosier State aren't required to learn cursive handwriting?

This year, members of the Indiana General Assembly are working to bring cursive back to the classroom. On Wednesday, the Senate education committee introduced a bill that would require all students to learn cursive.

"My initial concern was that if children are not taught to write cursive, they won't be able to read cursive," says State Sen. Jean Leising (R-Oldenburg) who wrote the bill.

Senator Leising also cites several studies, including one done by researchers at Indiana University in 2011 that shows children who are taught cursive handwriting generally learn to read faster than children who have no formal handwriting training.

If passed, the bill would go into effected in the 2013/2014 school year.
