Fort Wayne, Ind. (WFFT) - Fire crews battled a two-apartment fire at a house on Mechanic Street Thursday morning. The fire started around 8:30 a.m.
Firefighters fought heavy smoke and flames on the first floor of the building. According to firefighters, no one was home or injured when the fire started. Residents say two cats are still missing.
It took over an hour to get the fire under control and the fire started up again around noon. According to the owner of the building, residents of both units did not have renters' insurance.
Most belongings were removed from the unit in the back but everything in the front unit was destroyed. Red Cross is assisting both families.
A battalion chief on scene told WFFT that at noon the building was too dangerous to enter so firefighters had to battle flames from outside. Crews shut off water, gas and electricity to the buidling before the house was demolished around 1 p.m.
