Health experts say the number of local flu cases is starting to decline. But, we are still in the middle of what experts say is the worst flu season in years.

"We're still seeing pretty high flu activity across the nation, although it's starting to taper off" says Allen County Health Department spokesperson John Silcox.

Flu season has started much earlier than we're used to. It's also much worse.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is reporting that flu-related deaths have reached epidemic levels.

In fact, the Indiana State Department of Health says the number of flu deaths has risen to 43.

But, good news for Hoosiers, the end of flu season is in sight.

Silcox says the peak of flu season usually hits in February. "We're definitely a little ahead of schedule" he says.

But despite the decline the cases, it's not too late to get a flu shot. In fact, Silcox recommends getting one if you haven't so far.

"It's never been 100-percent effective for everyone, but it's the best tool we have and it's still the best way to reduce your risk" Silcox says.
