Hundreds Attend D'Arcy's Funeral

Hundreds gathered at Fort Wayne's Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception Friday for the funeral of Bishop John D'Arcy who died Sunday after a two year battle with cancer.

The two hour funeral mass included a sermon given by Monsignor Michael Heintz of South Bend. Heintz reflected on Bishop D'Arcy's devotion to his faith and fellow members of the diocese.

Following D'Arcy's retirement in 2009, Bishop Kevin Rhodes has served the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend.

In a speech following the mass, Rhodes said D'Arcy was still kept involved with the Diocese. Rhodes said he continued to write memos and communicate with church officials as little as a week before his death.

D'Arcy became the Bishop of Fort Wayne-South Bend in 1985 after spending the first half of his career in Boston.
