Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry, members of the City Council and local business leaders gathered Monday to announce sweeping new changes to the way the city budget will be funded...changes that could have an impact on how much tax you pay.

City officials say Fort Wayne will soon run into a deficit if cuts are not made and revenues are not increased.  The problem, says Mayor Henry, stems from a statewide mandate passed in 2008 that caps the amount of property tax a city can levy.

Officials say the cap has meant that the city has been unable to raise the revenue it needs.  During a press conference Monday, officials outlined a plan to raise local income taxes and city utility bills to raise additional revenue.

"The problem, says Mayor Henry, stems from a statewide mandate passed in 2008 that caps the amount of property tax a city can levy." So you knew 5 years ago what the MAXIMUM amount was that you could EVER collect, right? So why didn't you, oh I don't know, maybe SPEND LESS because you knew what the cap was 5 years ago?????
