Today is a day dedicated to thanking and admiring the men and woman who have fought for our nation’s freedom.
The annual Memorial Day parade kicked off the celebration, around 11:00 a.m. on the corner of Parnell and State Blv. The parade ended at Memorial Coliseum for a memorial service in honor of all veterans.
Many in the Fort Wayne community gathered to celebrate this day at the parade, which was full of veterans, marching bands and decorated floats.
One onlooker said “Outstanding, outstanding parade, bands and everything. It was great! And another long time parade goes said “Ive never seen so many people lines up.”
But with all the excitement the true meaning of this day was never forgotten.
Earners Garr, who formerly served in the Color Guard, says “Veterans give their lives for all us here in the U.S. that’s what Memorial Day is all about.”
Tim Niesley another veteran says “It is very important and makes us feel good and it makes all veterans throughout the country feel good.
Today the thought of those fighting overseas is close to the hearts and minds of the Fort Wayne community, and they send their best to the troops.
John Wearly, a veteran, says “I just hope God looks after them and takes care of them, and we get them out of there soon, and they protect our rights.”
John Wearly, a Fort Wayne resident says “Thank you for everything you do, we keep you in our prayers all the time.”
Many veterans we talked to today say "Freedom is not free," and they are appreciative of how the community recognizes their sacrifice and has come out to support them.
