Wheel Tax/Surtax

By: FOX Fort Wayne News
Updated: June 18, 2009
Wheel Tax Surtax hikes passed with a vote of four to three after heated debate. The approval doubles wheel tax surtax. The hike will raise vehicle registration next year. 65 percent of the money created through the tax rise will go toward repairing the 350 bridges the county maintains. The remaining 35 percent will go to the cities and towns in the county. County Council Representative, Paula Hughes, is upset with the outcome. She says “I am extremely disappointed that the council approved that tax today. I believe that we are taxing more than we should be. I think that we have the money in our budget to do there projects, and we are taking money out of peoples pockets that we don’t need to.” The tax will create five-point-eight million dollars over the next eight years.
