breaking news
The Old Fort used to be open daily for events. Now they hold roughly one a month.
Ken Sorg, the President of the Historic Ft. Wayne Society says we should be proud of our city’s history. “We are Fort Wayne; I mean this is how we got our name. If General Wayne didnt build a Fort here, who knows if we would be here?”
The Historic Fort Wayne Society has worked to expand the venue. Originally, the Old Fort focused only on the period between 1812 and 1820. The Society now has a new approach in hopes of increasing interest.
Tom Grant, a member of the Board of Historic Fort Wayne says “In May we had an education day with over 600 fourth graders. In June we had a Revolutionary War weekend.
This weekends theme is the Civil War. There will be a variety of things to see such as a wooden musket display, wool spinning, infantry drills, a blacksmith, and a Civil War doctor.
Grant says “You can read about it in books, we can watch a lot of DVDs and thats great, but when you come down and touch a beavers pelt or see a canon fire or see the ladies take wool and spin it into yarn thats something the kids remember.”
The Fort runs strictly on volunteers and donations.
Tomorrow the Lincoln Museum Foundation will present the Old Fort with a canon. The canon is from the Civil War period. It will be on display whenever the Fort is open to visitors.
