Lisa Lehman is a manager at Tropical Illusions tanning salon. She is surprised and upset about new studies placing tanning beds in a negative light. “I think its crazy” says Lehman. The World Health Organization is now saying that if you use tanning booths before turning 30, youre 75-percent more likely to develop skin cancer. “It really surprises me that its that high” adds Lehman. The W.H.O. places tanning booths on the same level as smoking cigarettes in regards to risks involved. “I dont know how they came to that conclusion” she says. Dermatologists however take a different view on the subject. “When most people think about tanning they think about aging, but dont think about skin cancer” says Dermatologist Dr. Alan Gilbert He often sees cancer cases where indoor tannings been involved. He says he’s seen at least 12 this past year. Yet the Indoor Tanning Association says there are positive effects of UV light. And what about the difference between outdoor and indoor tanning? Lehman says in terms of risks, “theres no difference.” But Dr. Gilbert disagrees saying “I think tanning beds are a worse skin cancer producer.”
