51 Fort Wayne schools held registration either last Friday or Monday. Parents are required to register their child so schools have the most up to date information, in case of emergency. Even returning students must re-register. Parents agreed it’s important the school has their child’s most recent information. For many, the first day of school is in two weeks. Registration gives teachers a chance to find out how many they’ll have in class. Gerald Arthur, the Principal at Lindley Elementary, says “Its very important because we want to know for class sizes and make sure our classes are balanced with the number of students.” Fort Wayne community schools say there are teachers still waiting to get call-backs from May’s layoffs. The number of registered students could impact how many will be returning to work this fall. Krista Stockman, the Fort Wayne Community Schools Public Information Officer, says “As we see where our numbers are as far as enrollment this fall we will also be determining our final staff needs. So there might be some hiring going on in the next couple weeks.” Lindley Elementary was proud to say all of the teachers they laid off are returning. Arthur says “As of today we have all teachers who were laid off, they are back, and we are very happy for that.” In case you couldn’t get to your child’s registration, you can still enroll them. The best way is to contact the school and ask them for the registration forms. You need to bring your child’s proof of residency, vaccination records, Social Security card and birth certificate when enrolling.
