breaking news
FWPDs headquarters on Creighton Ave. is wrought with problems that put police in danger or make their job harder including fire hazards. The building is about a century old. FWPD has been there for about 15 years.
The cramped space is at the top of the list on the Citys reasons for moving to 200 E. Berry Street. FWPD will either relocate to Berry Street or will move into the City-County Building with the Sheriff. The current location affords approximately 50,000 square feet. The new location will give FWPD about 80,000 square feet.
Fire hazards are among the current problems with the building. The building has one stairwell which would serve as an exit in case of a fire on the six story building. If that stairwell was blocked hundreds of employees would be trapped in a fire. Additionally, the building does not have a sprinkler system.
Police Chief Rusty York expects a move to a newer building to take place sometime next year.
