breaking news
The local chapter of Big Brothers Big Sisters has more than 400 kids in northeastern Indiana and its bordering Michigan counties on a waiting list. The agency matches needy kids with mentors.
Last year the agency placed more than 1800 kids and it hopes to do the same this year. Of the more than 400 kids on the waiting list, 230 are in Allen County and 70% are boys. The agency has a shortage of men who volunteer to mentor leaving boys without mentors.
The agency is holding two fund raising events in the next week including a celebrity golfing event with Chicago Bulls center Brad Miller. Miller is a Kendallville native and a former little brother. An auction is also being held. On the block is an autographed guitar from the Rolling Stones.
The auction will be at the Marriott Hotel on Washington Center Road at 6 p.m. on Wednesday September 9th. Admission is $25. The golf event will be Monday, September 14th. The cost is 500$ for a team which includes lunch and a gift basket.
To sign up for the golf event or to find out about having an informational volunteer presentation at your work place, contact Community Development Coordinator Rosalyn Wynne at 260-399-3609.
