Dealerships are no longer selling cars through the clunkers program, but theres still a lot going on behind the scenes. Cars are now being sent to the junk yard where they are torn apart. And dealerships are beginning to see government refunds trickling in. Ken Mills, the General Manager of Fort Wayne Infinity Nissan, says government reimbursement has really speed up since the program ended. The government has paid 47% of the deals his dealership made through clunker program. β€œIt was very slow at first, and then its picked up drastically in the last 4 or 5 business days.” The dealership has 7 days to get the car to the junk yard after they receive government payment. Dave Stage, the Plant Manager at Omni Source, says β€œ The cars are to be recycled within 180 days of being turned in.” One of the companies crushing clunkers in Fort Wayne is Omni Source.Theyve received over 200 cars from the program, and only have a handful left to smash. The shredding process can shred three cars in a min and when its done its no bigger than the size of your fist. There is no cost to the dealership to get the cars crushed, but they do have to disable the motor. The junk yard has to give the government the title to the cars they crush to prove the process is complete.
