The goal of the event was not only to inform, but also encourage those who are struggling with unemployment. The event hosts say competition is incredibly high right now, but there are jobs out there. Cheri Garvin has been unemployed for 2 months. She says when her contract expired, she wasnt asked back. Leaders at this career event say shes the perfect example of someone doing everything right in their job hunt. Garvin says “I go to 2 networking meetings a week. I use the internet every day and I also hit the street running.” Cheri has two degrees and years of experience to back her, but cant find a job. She says she came here today for encouragement. I needed a little reassurance. I needed a little self boost in confidence because it brings you down, it honestly brings you down. Todays job seminar is a result of 7 business owners witnessing their own friends lose their jobs. They put their heads together to find a way to help those struggling with unemployment. Steve Douglas, the President of 707 Marketing Group is says “Our hearts went out to the multitude of people that are actually unemployed. When we run job ads especially online, we get up to 4,000 resumes for one job.” The key piece of advice today was being persistent. Douglas says “We want to encourage them, if you just stay out there and work hard as if they would with a job, they will accomplish what they need to accomplish in their next career.” Cheri says shell take that advice to heart, and stay focused on her goal. Garvin says “Im giving it all Ive got, and yes, hopefully I would love to have a position by October 31st.” Other job advice given at the event was to make business cards. Make sure they are professional quality. They also encouraged online networking, but warned job hunters to find a way to add a personal touch to connections made online.
