A four week old baby is dead and Police say the circumstances are suspicious. The mother of the infant took the baby to a day care instead of the hospital. FOX Fort Wayne spoke with a friend of the baby's mother who works at the day care. The friend says the mother was frantic and crying when she got to the day care. She says the baby was already dead before the mother showed up.

911 got the call from the in-home daycare in the 5700 block of Fairfield Avenue  around 8:30 Thursday morning. The friend says the mother told her quote "I think my baby is dead." It was then that they called 911.

The child care provider says she asked the mother what happened. The mother said she wasn't sure, but that she had fallen on the baby last night when she slipped on a trash bag.

Police are suspicious because the mother brought the baby from her home to the day care instead of going the hospital. We asked Raquel Foster, the Spokesperson for F.W.P.D. who the mother didn’t call 911. She said “That is a very interesting question, one that we hope to have answers to soon. It's not clear why she went to that home rather than going directly to the hospital or contacting 911 herself.”

The mother's friend also told us she over head police ask the mother why the baby had burn marks on her chest. And that the burns had been there long enough that they were infected.

The mother is not in custody, but has been questioned. The coroner performed an autopsy on the baby Thursday afternoon. Police say the mother has three other children; they could be witnesses if foul play is suspected.
