The Continuous Abuse Cycle

Experts say abuse often times only leads to more abuse.

“People are abusing themselves and they don't know another way of

life and so they take their frustration and stress out on their kids” says Heather Stemen, Children's Director for Charis House, a Fort Wayne women and children's shelter.

Twenty-five-year-old LaDawn Johnson is charged with battery and neglect of a dependent. Twenty-seven-year-old Brandon Black faces the same charges: two different cases, but both involving a dead baby.

"The biggest thing about working here is that we are that support system for these women and these children to work through the past” says Stemen.

Drug and alcohol abuse can often also be a factor. Johnson's previously been charged with possessing marijuana, while Black has been arrested for driving drunk.

It isn't proven though that substance abuse was a factor in either homicide case.

“Everybody's got trauma that they've got to work through” Stemen says.

But, bigger than drugs, bigger than alcohol, and bigger than stress, Stemen say having no support is the main cause of child neglect.

"I think if we are out there and reaching out towards these people that need help, then we won't be hearing these stories” she says.
