As part of that sentence, the 13-year-old boy must regularly report to a probation officer. Plus, he has to complete individual counseling and anger management classes.
The attack happened in October during gym class at Memorial Park Middle School. The boy has stayed in juvenile detention since it happened. His parents had no comment on the judge's sentence.
The victim's grandmother says the attack caused her grandson to have a skull fracture and bleeding in the brain, and that his injuries will have long-term effects on his life. She addressed the juvenile in court Monday telling him, “That bat didn’t make you big, it made you small.”
The 13-year-old will have a follow-up hearing in December 2011.
