Fort Wayne Home to Wealthiest Zip Code in Indiana

   Indiana's wealthiest zip code is in Fort Wayne.

   A geographic information company identified 46814 in southwest Fort Wayne as the richest zip code in the state. Many people are surprised because Fort Wayne beat out Indianapolis suburbs Carmel and Fishers.

   “I find it very surprising considering all the construction and economic growth that's going on in Carmel right now,” said Fort Wayne resident Bruce Scott.

   But other residents aren't shocked at all.

   “I wouldn't doubt it,” said Brendan Berkshire. “I've lived out here for a few years."

   “There are some beautiful houses around this area, nice great plots of land,” said Graeme Robertson.

   “That's kind of the reason I live in this area, less crime,” said Jeffery Wood.

   According to the geographic information company Esri, the average household in the 46814 zip code makes more than $165,000 dollars a year. The median home value is almost $243,000. The area is predominantly white, most people are married, and more than half have college degrees.

   “It attracts people that are moving up, and it usually attracts families,” said Greg Adams, a realtor who sells a lot of homes in the 46814 zip code. He says the ranking can help attract new people to the area.

   “When somebody's moving in from out of town, you know, they might want to know, hey, this is a substantial zip code,” said Adams.

   Still, Adams is surprised the wealthiest zip code in the state is in Fort Wayne.

   “The fact that we beat an Indianapolis zip code with large homes just is really amazing,” said Adams.
   The 46814 zip code is home to several big names in Fort Wayne including Pizza Hut owner Dick Freeland, sports agent Eugene Parker, city councilman Mitch Harper, and city clerk Sandy Kennedy.
