Firefighters spent much of Saturday evening battling a large blaze on at the former Fort Wayne Metal Protection plant on the 1500 block of Wabash Avenue in Southeast Fort Wayne.

The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded at around 4:30 Saturday evening and remained on scene into the night.

Hazardous materials experts were brought in to assess the damage for fear that chemicals inside the plant leaked out into the surrounding area, but officials say none were found and the smoke did not appear to be toxic enough to force evacuations.

Neighbors say the building has been empty for several years, and firefighters have not yet determine what caused the building to ignite. There were no reports of injuries.
