East Central Towers is just a few minutes outside downtown Fort Wayne. It's just down the street from Indiana Tech. This afternoon, Richard Anderson was outside the apartment complex, enjoying the nice weather, when he heard gunshots.
"I heard gun shots going off and it sounded like it was coming from behind the building" Anderson tells WFFT.
Police say a man was shot in the face. The victim told officers a man shot him in the parking lot and then ran northbound. Police say they found a trail of blood in the apartment building. They also say there was blood on the victim's apartment door.
For Anderson, none of this comes as a shock. "Just in the past three years, I've heard shootings going on" he says.
The shooting may not have surprised Anderson, but it left other residents stunned.
"Normally things run pretty smooth, so this was really a shock to us that something like this would happen" says Eric Jefferson, who's lived at the complex for the past seven years.
Unlike Anderson, Jefferson says things have gotten better over the past few years. He says the complex is a mix of young folks and senior citizens and that everyone is very friendly.
"Really though we have pleasant days and we get along an we just want to keep it like that" he says.
Yet, Jefferson and Anderson do agree that the surrounding area has its share of drug problems. Both men tell WFFT that a drug issue may have led to the shooting.
At this point, the victim remains in the hospital in serious condition. Officers have not yet made any arrests, but are continuing to the search the area for more evidence.
