Shootings are becoming common.
Homicides are becoming more frequent; many involve firearms.

"Our criminals have a lot easier access to firearms. They're having access to more high power firearms. We're seeing some assault rifles out there. You know things that are very frightening to us" says Fort Wayne Police Department Spokesperson Raquel Foster.

It's frightening indeed, as gun violence rises in Fort Wayne, with the latest shooting just this morning.

It happened around 4 AM at a home on the 300 block of Kinnaird Avenue. Witnesses say a man in a ski mask went into the home, shot 42-year-old Nathaniel Myles, then left.

Myles is now in the hospital in serious condition, and officers are left searching for suspects. It's a challenge when it comes to not only this shooting but all shootings.

"You might see a drive-by. Just the other night we had somebody that walked in to a home and fires on his victim and leaves...very little evidence that's left at the scene" Foster says.

Then just last week, two men opened fire at an ambulance, injuring a paramedic and three others. This incident is believed to involve another rising trend: gangs.

"Yes, we have seen a spike in gang activity" Foster says.

Foster says the FWPD is currently other local police agencies to address the issue.

We're sharing information with other law enforcement agencies. We meet on a weekly basis" she says. She also says they're also strengthening their relationship with the FBI in hopes of combating the problem.
