A woman jogging along the river greenway near Lower Huntington and Tillman road this morning was sexually assaulted.

A nearby motorist eventually intervened, and gave police a detailed description of the suspect.

Police say that sexual assault cases like today's are not common for the area or Fort Wayne in general, but people still need to be aware when traveling alone and to always be aware of your surroundings.

A woman was jogging along the river greenway approaching this tunnel under the Lower Huntington bridge when she was sexually assaulted.  While the suspect fled on foot Sergeant. Mark Brooks says he's hopeful that the attacker will be identified.

Do to the nature of this the time of day and the location we think citizens may have seen the subject as he perhaps exited the greenway area," said Brooks.

Latricia Bender lives across the street from the greenway and is a victim of sexual assault herself.

"First of all I was a rape victim and I understand," said Bender.

Bender says she's learned from her traumatizing experience, and wants others to know how to protect themselves when faced with danger.

"They have weapons whether they know it or not I'm talking about the victims themselves.  You can use your keys that you enter your home with or if you are ever attacked you can make a loud noise," said Bender.

Sergeant Brooks also says there are a few things you can do to stay safe when walking alone.

"Always let people know your destination where you are going and what time frame you are looking at and the second thing is just be aware of your surroundings," said Brooks.

"Don't let your attacker see that your free handed and unaware of your surroundings," said Bender.

Police are asking anyone with information to call 9-1-1 or crime stoppers.
