Flu Season Is On Its Way

Allen County health officials say it's never been easier to get your flu shot, with flu shots being offered at walk-in clinics located in big box stores like Walmart, Walgreens, and CVS. 

It is also easier because of the variety. There is a flu shot for everyone.  The elderly can get a high dose shot.

The peak season for flu in Allen County is from late November to early February. The Allen County Health Department says the earlier you get the shot the better.  The elderly and kids are at highest risk. Flu-mist is a kid-friendly way to get your child vaccinated against the flu, it's a nasal spray.

If you are over 49 and you still don't like needleshealth officials say a new inter-dermal shot became available last year.  It uses a needle, but it is more of a prick than a shot.

Some doctor's offices are also offering preservative-free vaccines for kids 4 to 18 to pacify the more health-conscious parents. You should call ahead to see if your provider carries the flu shot that you'd like to get. Not all providers carry all types.

Health department officials say although the options for how to get vaccinated have changed, the most important thing is to get it.  They say flu-prevention techniques like coughing into your sleeve, sneezing into a tissue, and washing your hands are still effective ways to protect yourself.
