After two years and nearly 900 ideas submitted by the public, the Fort Wayne mayor's office says it has a plan for spending some of the city's $75 million legacy fund.

On Tuesday, Mayor Tom Henry and members of the Legacy Task Force presented their plan to the city council. They say their goal is to create projects that attract further investment in the Summit City.

The headline of the plan is a proposal to increase development along the rivers in the Downtown area. Officials say they want to commission a study that will find which areas of the river are most suited to development, and encourage businesses to build on its banks.

Other proposals included spending money to add more hiking trails, beautify the railroad overpasses downtown and building additional facilities that would encourage youth sports events in the city.

The spending proposals also include several endowments that would provide money for specific reasons each year.

They include a downtown public art endowment that would provide money for art installations, and an entrepreneurial endowment that would provide seed money to companies, encouraging them to stay in Fort Wayne.

Before the projects can begin, city council members must first approve an ordinance governing how the money can be disbursed. Discussion on that is expected next week.
