Hurricane Sandy hasn't just shut down power, schools, and roadways. She's also put many blood donations out on the East Coast on hold.

"They are not collecting blood today and probably will not be collecting blood in the next week" says Sharyn Whitman, CEO of the Indiana/Ohio American Red Cross Blood Services Center.

On average, the American Red Cross collects 44,000 blood products each day, but that number has plummeted since Sandy stormed in.

"We've had in over 16 states blood collections curtailed. So far we've lost about 11,000 blood collections" says Whitman. That's why Red Cross centers throughout the North, West, South and here in the Midwest are asking donors for help.

"We have seen some increase in blood donors this afternoon" Whitman says.

Blood donations are shipped from Fort Wayne to a center in Cleveland. They're then processed, separated and shipped out to places in most need.

"One of the greatest things about the people in all of our communities is that we respond to people when they need" she tells WFFT.

All blood types are needed, especially O Negative.

If can can't donate blood, there are others ways to help out.

You can make a monetary donation by texting "REDCROSS" to 9-0-9-9-9, by heading www.redcross.org or by calling 1-800-RedCross.
