Local first responders honored a Washington Township firefighter Monday after he was killed in an accident while driving his fire truck.

On Monday evening, Washington Township fireman Mark Haudenschild was driving a department tanker truck to assist in a brush fire on the 4600 block of Butler Road in Northwest Fort Wayne.

Investigators say, for some reason, Haudenschild lost control of the vehicle, rolling it several times while turning on to Butler Road from Hillegas Road. Haudenschild was thrown from the vehicle and pinned underneath. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials say they are not sure what caused him to lose control of the vehicle, although they say shifting water weight of the truck may have been a factor.

On Monday, local firefighters and police officers gathered along Main Street while Haudenschild's body was driven from the hospital to the funeral home. Firemen at Fort Wayne's Engine One fire house saluted as the procession travelled by.

Haudenschild leaves behind a wife and two children, ages one and three years old.
