Just days after President Obama was re-elected, an online petition was set up for Indiana asking the federal government to allow the Hoosier State to secede from the union.

And Indiana isn't alone. Similar petitions have been created for 21 other states.

"After every election there's times where people say 'well, I'll leave the country if I don't get what I want' and this is one of these unhealthy responses" says IPFW Political Science professor Mike Wolf.

The petitions were created in an open forum on the official White House website. Some petitions have just a few hundred signatures, others have several thousand.

Right now, the petition for Indiana has over 18,000 signatures.
If it reaches 25,000, the Obama administration has agreed to issue an official response.

But what then?

"I don't think there's going to be any traction" says Wolf who adds that the petitions might lead to protests even counter protests.

"But, there's certainly no elected official who you'll see take up this in any of these states" he says.

WFFT caught up with Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels today to get his take on the issue.

"It won't result in anything. I think it's an expression of frustration" Daniels says.

He says while folks are entitled to that point of view, he doesn't think the movement will have any legs.

The Indiana petition has until December 10 to get to 25,000 signatures.
Several petitions have already reached the 25,000 mark including ones for Louisiana and Texas.
